The International Monetary Fund and Marxists are exceptionally in agreement: the economic crisis resulting from the corona pandemic is arguably the most drastic event that the capitalist world economy has experienced since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Unemployment is rising at a record pace in the United States. The EU threatens to break down over the question on who pays to fight the pandemic. Global government debt is growing faster than ever, and crisis will exacerbate inequality globally. Today’s pandemic is neither the first nor the deadliest in history, but its social and economic impact is unprecedented. David McNally discusses with us how Corona could become a “trigger” that shakes the foundations of fragile capitalism in the 21st century. He explains why aid from governments and central banks do not solve the problem, but only treats symptoms of an underlying crisis. And we will discuss with him what struggles socialists and the working class are facing.
